A SEA SHE SAW

A SEA SHE SAW
( English translation )

“ Aren’t you boys ready yet ? You said you had to go early to school to catch the Poster Exhibition ! ...where is Girish ?
Mom was all over the place, getting their school bags and lunch boxes ready. She had to drop them and head for her office before traffic got worse.
“ I am ready, Amma !” Said Suresh , “ Its Girish who is delaying. He is reading the calender for Ajji.
GreatGrandMother was in the drawing room with Girish, peering into a Kannada daily calender. “ Did you read that correctly, Putta ? What thithi is it today again ? ”
“ Wait Ajji ! Let me read it all again for you Said Girish patiently, “ Look it is written here. Its Shashti thithi.”
“ O, Shashti , is it ? Today we have to do puja to the  Huttha (ant hill ) that's under the Aralikatte by the samudra . ....In those bygone days ......”
Girish had already left and there was no one else to listen to her, yet the 90 year old Ajji went on mumbling and rambling about something no one could understand.
“ Bye Bye Ajji !  waved the  boys and got into the car.
“ Bye !  Said Ajji, a huge toothless smile creasing her wrinkled face and lighting up her eyes.
Mother called out to the HomeNurse, reminded  her about Ajji’s food and medicines and started the car.
“ Anu ! Don't forget to offer flowers to the Huttha when you pass that way  reminded Ajji “Subbaraya of the Huttha is our clan god.  But careful!, never go near the samudra (sea).
“ Alright Ajji, don't worry. Bye.  waved Mother, driving away.

“ Amma, why does Ajji always keep talking about the sea?  Wondered Suresh, when they were on the road, “Where is the Sea in Bengaluru ? ”
“ Poor Ajji is very old  said Mother, “ Her memory is all mixed up and her mind wanders. She herself may not know what she is talking about ....Poor thing !
“ Even then, Ajji is so sweet, isn't it Amma !
Everybody loved sweet Ajji. When Father brought his Grandmother home and announced that she would live with them henceforth, everybody welcomed her warmly.
They all loved her kind nature , her soft hands and her sweet voice .
“ Sometimes, she may say things that make no sense to us  Mother had told them , “ But , don't bother, just listen to her, nodding your heads, that will make her happy.
Father had scheduled an appointment with a psychologist for examining Ajji the next week.

When Suresh and Girish got dropped at school, the compound  was looking festive with huge posters and banners. There were also a few stands on which replicas of stone inscriptions were displayed. Curious students were milling around the exhibits.

As soon as the school bell sounded, the students fell in line and assembled in the courtyard. After prayer and salutations, the Principal introduced one of the two guests who were standing with him.
“ Dear students, this is Mr. Kumar, a researcher. He is here to talk to you about ancient Inscriptions and their importance. He will then guide you through all these posters  showing inscriptions found in our City.”
The students clapped in welcome and the microphone was passed to Mr. Kumar.
“ Thank you ! Its wonderful to see your enthusiasm . .....let me start with a question : how do you save your important documents ?
Many answers filled the air :
“ In files.
“ In dairies and notebooks.”
“ In hard disks, pen drives and Cloud.
“ Right ! But hundreds of years ago, none of these were around. Yet many documents like grants , genealogies, administrative bylaws, records of temple and tank building, memorials to heroes were all saved. The materials  they chose for saving were stone and metal. The records were in the languages and scripts in use at that period. These have lasted for centuries and come to us. We call them Inscription Stones and Copper Plate Inscriptions.
He could see that the students were all listening   with much interest.
“ These inscriptions are bridges to our Past. They tell us about the history, culture, administration, languages, wars, commerce and daily life of the ancient people and about the forts, temples, ranks and cities they built. They are storehouses of information.”
At this point, Suresh shot up his hand : “Sir my name is Suresh and I have a question.
“ Yes? What is it , Suresh ?
“ I saw the posters and pictures of Inscriptions. They don't look like our languages at all. How to read them ?
“ Good question !  said Mr. Kumar, “These are all in languages familiar to us : Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit. But written in scripts no longer in use , because our scripts have evolved from that to something newer. Still there are some experts who are trained to read those ancient scripts ..... Here is Mr. Murthy, one such epigraphy expert who can tell you more about it.
Mr. Murthy waved to the students, accepting their applause .
“Before that,  let me tell you briefly  about a great man, Continued  Mr. Kumar , “ who collected, read, translated and indexed 9000 such old inscriptions in our State. Benjamin Lewis Rice ......

“ Rice was born in Bengaluru. He received primary and secondary education in the old Mysore State and went to United Kingdom to get higher education. But he returned and took a job as High School Principal and was then made  Inspector of Education. His job required him to travel all over the State and that is when he started noticing Inscriptions in many places. He became curious and started collecting information about archaeological artifacts from locals. He started studying and researching with the help of knowledgeable assistants, often going to nooks and corners riding his horse to bring back  things of historic value. This is how he compiled The Epigraphia Carnatica, a monumental index of 9000 inscriptions of our state with their translations. Thanks to his efforts,  we are now able to reconstruct the history of our state through the reigns of Gangas, Chalukyas, Cholas, Rashtrakutas, Pallavas , Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and a host of feudatories .....now to Suresh’s question about how to read them, here’s Mr. Murthy.”
“ Thanks , Kumar  Said Mr. Murthy, taking the microphone, “ As Kumar mentioned, our Inscriptions are  in many different scripts. For example, Ashoka’s edicts are in ancient Brahmi Script that is no longer in use. But, with training, it can still be read...
Now it was Girish who stood up with a query : “ Sir, my name is Girish . We may not be able to read Brahmi , Sanskrit, Tamil or Telugu. But the posters say the Hebbal Inscription is in Kannada. Still, we are unable to read it !
“ There is good reason for it.  Said Mr. Murthy, “ Our Kannada is a very ancient language, but has grown and evolved in four Stages. The Kannada in use during 5th Century is called Purva Haley Kannada. By 9th Century it has evolved into Haleygannada. In 12th Century, it was Nadugannada. Only in 18th Century did it become like the Kannada we know today, that is Hosagannada .....The Hebbal Inscription is in the PurvahaleyKannada script, which is why you cannot read it without training.
“ Do you know, Children , that there is a saying : “ The people who do not care to know their origin, history, heritage and culture are like  rootless trees? How will such a tree thrive or stand strong for long ? This is where Inscriptions help. They talk about our origins, our land, lives of our people etc which paved the way for our present living. Do you now understand their importance ? ”
“ Yes Sir !  Chorused the students.
“ Sir , how do we study Inscriptions ? “ Asked another boy.
“ Before that let me know, how many of you want to be Epigraphists ?
A lot of hands went up.
“ First you must all complete basic schooling. Then you take up subjects like History and Archaeology for graduation. Only after that you join University research fields in Epigraphy or allied subjects and get a doctorate ! ....
“ Now that you have understood so much  about the importance of Inscriptions , tell me is it not important to preserve them ?
“ Definitely Sir !  said the students.
“ Very good ....of the 9000 Inscriptions documented by Rice, only some remain. Many are lost. There maybe some he has not documented too. The Hebbal Inscription  Stone, found recently, is a good example. Many inscriptions are destroyed by ignorant people  who do not know their value; urbanization has destroyed many. In view of this, finding an undamaged ancient stone like The Hebbal Stone is almost a miracle ......you should  all  have awareness and be vigilant from now onwards. If ever you come across any old stone with inscribed writing, you should protect it and help to preserve it. Will you do it ?
“ Yessssir !  shouted the students with enthusiasm.
“ Ok ! .....now go around and look at  the posters. You can read about their time and the translations in the brochures. You will be shown what to do to make inscriptions clearly legible. And you will also be shown how to make estampage from a model inscription stone .
“ Can we ourselves make sir ?
“ Yes , you can surely try your hand at it.”
“ Wow ! Thats Great !
It was really an exciting morning for the  students.

It was Sunday morning. Suresh and Girish were getting ready for a gully cricket match.
“ Amma ! Our Ganga team is playing a match today with the Hoysala team of the neighbouring Apartment complex. We need to have a pucca pitch . Can you give me some rice flour to mark the boundary lines ? We ran out of chalk powder.
“ I hear that ground you usually play in has been bought by a builder.  And building work has started it seems .” Said  Mother , I think you boys should look for some other place to play.
“ No, Ma, the watchman there said it will take 10 or 15 more days for work to start. So we are having a last game there today.” assured Girish, putting the plastic bag of rice flour she gave, into his kit .

“ Going for a game, Children ? Have a nice time !” Called out Ajji , “ But just make sure you don't  wander off towards the Samudra (sea) be safe ......see, that's how my neighbour Seethalakshmi and I had wandered off looking for hamsas and she went and fell into the sea and I jumped into the water and pulled her out and for 10 days after that we both suffered such a high fever and don't even ask what a terrible time we had .......you are still children, its dangerous, who will save if you fall into the sea....? That's why I am cautioning you ....”
Suresh hugged Ajji affectionately “ Ajji, don't worry at all. There is no danger, we are just playing  cricket in the empty  lot  in the next block. There is no sea here in Bengaluru !
Ajji looked confused: “ You say we are in Bengaluru ? In Chikpete?”
“ Ajji , Chikpete is a very old locality, we are very far from that place .”
“ Very far ? How far ?And in which direction ?   Ajji was insistent.
“ Yes, very far, to the East of it  , replied the boy patiently.
Ajji brightened up “See, I am right ! What did I tell you ! The samudra (sea) is far to the East of Chikpete only ! That's why I'm worried.
Girish joined them saying, “Ayyo Ajji ! Come, you see for yourself where we are playing !
The two of them took Ajji to the balcony window and pointed out :
“ Look over there. Can you see a line of forest there ? ...do you see a few buildings this side ? And see that empty patch of wasteland in front  of the forest line ? That's where we play. Where is the sea ?
“ Yes, yes, the forest !   mumbled Ajji absent mindedly “That is where the huge Ashwatha mara ( Peepal tree) is, in the big forest ! Can you see it ?
The boys looked at each other and shrugged. It was useless to argue with Ajji when she got into her delusions. So, just to pacify her, they said :  Yes Ajji , we see the big Ashwattha mara !
“ Yes, yes ! Its there ! There only !    Remarked Ajji happily, “The Samudra is there, near that only ! A huge roaring sea ! What an immense expanse of water ! ....that is where Seethalakshmi and I ......”
She rambled on.
The boys took her back to her easychair and comforted her : “ Ok Ajji, we will not go near the sea . We will be careful. You just don't  keep worrying about us ....be peaceful and watch your Hanuman TV serial ...bye bye Ajji !
‘ Hopefully, next week, the doctors will be able to find a solution to rid  dear Ajji of her delusions !  Sighing , the boys left home and soon became engrossed with plans for their game.

The next day, Monday, Father and Mother  received a call from the school principal’s office :
“ We are coming to meet you now , with your sons .
They became greatly anxious.
‘ What have the boys done !’ They thought in panic.
And soon they arrived. The Principal, their sons and two other men.
Only when they saw the pleasant, smiling face of the Principal did the parents feel a bit relieved.
The  Principal introduced the two men who had accompanied him as Mr. Kumar and Mr. Murthy.
“ Oh, so, these are the gentlemen who did the poster show on Inscriptions  in school ! Smiled Mother, “The boys have not stopped talking about stones, inscriptions and copper plates since that day !
“Talking of enthusiasm, do you know what your boys did yesterday? ”
“ What did they do ? ” Wondered Father , helping Mother to serve them all fruit juice.
“ They sent me this  !  Said the Principal, holding up his mobile phone.
It was a photograph  of large slab of stone, lying in an overgrown, forest like place.
“ Now what is this !  Demanded Mother, a bit agitated ,  you said you were going to play cricket , how and why did you end up in a forest !
“ Madam , calm down ....hear the whole story first ! “ Said the Principal,
“ Boys , tell your parents all about your adventure !
Suresh began speaking :
“ We did have a good game. When Vishnu from Hoysala team made a powerful hit, I wanted to catch the ball before it crossed boundary for a sixer. I ran wildly and caught it !
“ He caught it, but fell into a  slush that was between the boundary and the forest line .  Added Girish.
Then they both poured out the story,  talking excitedly :
“ I helped him up and just when turning to go, we saw something stuck in the muddy patch .”
“ It  looked like a stone slab, with some carving on it !
“ So we got all the boys to help us pull the stone out.
“ And we emptied all our water bottles over the surface and we could  see letters engraved on it .
“ So remembering what Murthy-Sir had told us that day, we smeared all the remaining rice flour we had over the  surface
“ and then we could  see the inscription much better.
“ It looked important, so we just clicked a picture and sent it to Principal-Sir.

“ That was a good thing they did. ” Said Mr. Kumar, “ As soon as he received the picture, Sir forwarded it to me and I shared it with Mr. Murthy. Because of the flour rubbing, we could see certain words and that  got us very excited. So, as soon as school opened today, we requested the Principal to allow the boys to show us the place .
“ We all went there and checked the stone ,  added the Principal “it seems like a very important discovery and we are all excited about it.
Father gave the boys a surprised look “Why dint you boys say anything about finding the stone to me or Amma ?
“ Appa , we were so excited with the Lego sets you brought us , on return from your trip, that we forgot about the stone .”
“ Boys will be boys !  they  all laughed.
“ You say its an important inscription ,what is it about, Murthy-Sir?” Enquired Father.
“ Before that , may we have a word with your Grandmother ?
Father and Mother were astonished .
“ Ajji ? You want to talk to Ajji ? Why ?
Suresh and Girish had already brought Ajji to the drawing room saying,
“ Come Ajji , our Principal wants to meet you.
All guests greeted Ajji with a Namaste and Mr.Kumar came and sat next to her.
“ Ajji, your greatgrandchildren  say there was a samudra ( sea) in your city ? Really ?
“ Yes , dear man. A samudra was really there and what a magnificent samudra it was ! Huge , so huge ! It had 9 mega canals, so you can imagine how much water it had ! At night , sleeping at home, I could hear its thunderous splashing .....now my hearing is not good, so I hear nothing . ...these people can hear, but they don't pay attention.
Father was getting a bit embarrassed by her rambling and tried to stop her chatter. But Mr. Kumar gestured to him, not to disturb her.
Ajji was going on merrily  “ You know that Huttha ( termite mound) on its bank , that's the abode of our Subbaraya. Our family deity. And next to it was that stone slab  they called Yantra Kallu or Tantra kallu or something. We used to smear turmeric and kumkum on that stone slab too, when we did puja to our Hutthada Subbaraya. Once, after doing such puja, Seethalaksmi and I saw some very nice, white birds which used to come from beyond the Himalayas, near the water. This Seethalakshmi, stupid girl, went to  have a closer look and fell into the water. In that cold season ! So I too jumped in and pulled her out. And we were shivering and shivering .....” Ajji was lost in the Past
“ Ajji , what was the name of your town ? ” Asked Mr. Kumar
“ Not just our town, nine towns around our samudra ( sea) had the same name as the samudra (sea ).
“ And what was the samudra called ? ”
“ What else can it be called when it belonged to our Lord Subbaraya ! remarked Ajji a bit crossly, “ It was called Subbarayasamudra !
Upon hearing that name, Mr. Kumar and Mr. Murthy gave at each other knowing looks . Wonderful !
Ajji had been speaking for longer than usual , so Mother gave her a drink of water and took her to her room for rest.
Mr. Murthy turned to Father “ You asked what the Inscription says . It says exactly what Ajji told us  now ! ......yes, this Inscription stone is about 1000 years old and belongs to the time of Cholas. A  huge tank, named Subbarayasamudra , was dug by a Chola king to supply  water to 9 villages ( Navagrama) and he had made 9 canals for the purpose. This is the fact that is recorded in the Inscription stone  found by the boys.
Father was dumbstruck.
“ As soon as Murthy Sir told me what he could make out from the photo, I searched the Gazettes said Mr.Kumar “And  examined some old maps. And found out that a region east of Bengaluru, comprising nine villages around a huge tank , was the naadu called Subbarayasamudra. This small naadu fell prey to the rakshasa called Urbanization and disappeared totally. ....you will be surprised to know that it is that same Subbarayasamudra that has become SS Layout now, this place where you live !
Father and Mother shook their heads in disbelief . “ We had thought Ajji was senile , losing her mind and talking meaningless things.!
“ Sir, we don't know if your Ajji’s strong belief that she is in Subbarayasamudra  is because of Deja Vu , or spiritual gut feeling or some other magical reason. But one thing I am sure of ! That your Ajji , with so much information within her mind , is really a Living Historical Record !”
“ Thanks to your sons , we have found a very valuable historical document ......” said Mr. Murthy , shaking Father’s hand, “but it is deeply distressing to realize that such a huge and ancient water body, which was  in good condition even when your grandmother was young, should now have disappeared without trace ! Just within 70 or 80 years , such a degradation ! Makes me very sad ....”
“ Perhaps we can still try to revive at least part of that tank , that will be so helpful for our City facing water crisis  said the Principal , “ But we don't know if land sharks will allow that to happen ! Anyway, we are very happy that, because of the awareness created by people like Mr. Kumar, my students were able to help in saving a piece of history of our City ! Now it is up to the experts to preserve the stone properly.
As everyone took leave, Father and Mother hugged Suresh and Girish with much pride and happiness .

***************
In time ,
There was a public movement to save and revive the old Subbarayasamudra tank, which had now become the waste land near the forest. The area marked for construction work was reclaimed by the Government and all licence to convert that tank bed to residential locality were cancelled in a court case , on the strength of old records , maps and the  Inscription stone.
With great public support and corporate initiatives, the tank was revived. Fortunately, after the desilting efforts, good seasonal rains  filled the  tank.
The Inscription Stone was installed right on its bank, in a special pavilion, rather than in a museum,  to inspire people to protect and take pride in our environmental heritage.
As days and months passed, birds started visiting the revived tank. Someday soon, even the hamsas from beyond Himalayas may start visiting  ! And Suresh and Girish will photograph them to be shown to Beloved Ajji .
